UDAYAM S.H.G, UDYOGAMANDAL

Udyogamandal is an industrial belt of kerala. So many public sector undertakings are situated here like fertilizers and Chemicals Travancore Ltd.(F.A.C.T.); Hindustan Insecticides (HIL) and Travancore Cochin Chemicals (TCC) etc. In these factories so many people are working. But most of the people are belonging to a different states of India. Major percent of local people are doing some other works, which does not fetch them, much profit. They are suffering from chronic diseases like Asthma, Bronchitis, and Cancer. The main source of income is from petty trades and cooly only. This led the people to miseries and sufferings. The life of women and children was in a pathetic condition.
The Alangad block authorities identified the fact and decided to help them by the way of central scheme named Swarna Jayanthi Grama Sworozgar Yojana. From the BPL list selected group of women and conducted an awareness camp. The subject matter specialists and experts opened before them a new horizon of bright future. The enthusiastic women organized a group comprising 10 members under the banner “UDAYAM S.H.G.” Out of the 10 members 8 women belonged to general community and two members are from scheduled caste. Self help group was formed on 06th June 2001. Every week they assembled and discussed about various things which they are facing in the society in the day to day life. The meeting was conducted in their own houses alternatively. They started an A/c in the nearest bank and their saving deposited promptly. The lending process among themselves though with low interest seemed to be a boon which served them to meet their urgency.
The first grading was conducted on 29th January, 2002 by the block officials and bank authorities who got satisfied in their credentials which scored them high. As a result they sanctioned and amount of Rs 15,000/- from the bank as loan and Rs 10,000/- from the block as revolving fund. Using this fund they started small business like food processing, selling of rice grains etc. Step by step they began to employ various measures put forth by authorities. Their love for vocation and as a means of income helped them to spread their business with much case touching various levels of excellence.
The second grading was on 24th February 2004. After thorough scrutiny and evaluation the authorities found out that they have all the eligibility to get the maximum assistance from the bank and block. Then, prepared a detailed project report of Rs.320000/- -Rs.240000/- as a bank loan and Rs 80000/- as Govt. subsidy. They widened their business by introducing readymade garment making, Catering and Snakes making which was in great demand. Their unity and enthusiasm helped them to flourish their business. Now they are repaying the installments promptly, at the same time earning an amount not less than Rs 2000/- per mensem. Now they are self sufficient, confident, and optimists and actively lending a hand of support to their family.
