Mr. Sivan is a resident of Vazhakulam Grama Panchayath in the Vazhakulam Block area. He is a member of scheduled caste and belongs to BPL family. He is a well known skilled worker in handicraft items. For his best performance in wooden works he has won a prestigious award from the Coconut Development Board. Even though he had enough experience in this field, all his efforts failed because no body to stretch a hand towards him to meet the expense of business. But in the midst of all once he tried to start his business and purchased some coconut wood. Unfortunately it become a failure and all his effort was in vain. The material he purchased was not of good quality. Since a member of BPL family all his attempts was failed to recover from the situation.
Later he went to various places and worked hard and earned sufficient money and purchase land to construct a house. The Grama Panchayath extended assistance to construct house under the housing scheme for SC/ST. Then he thought of a plan to take rented building for his job works. At this time he came to know about the SGSY Scheme which extends assistance to BPL families for self employment. Then he contacted Vazhakulam Block Development Office and from where a loan was sanctioned to himm for Rs.50000/- under SGSY scheme for starting a handicraft unit. By utilizing the loan, he made wooden handicrafts models in Rosewood. His models are of unique and specially designed to the choice of consumers. The model consists of wooden elephants, the model of horse, lions, the Lord Krishna, Lord Vigneswara, Goddess Saraswathi and Jesus Christ.etc. He made small and big models as per orders which costs Rs. 600/- to 7,000/- approximately. Now he is getting more orders locally and from abroad. Being a master craftsman he is able to give training for others too. His vast experience, ability and skill is being utilized by the Block Panchayath in giving training to SHG Members. His family include wife and two daughters and Sivan is the only helping hand to them. Repayment of loan is prompt and regular. Prompt repayment of loan will be an important aspect of SGSY not only to ensure a discipline but more importantly as it reflects the success of self employment programmes. Sivan is an example for this. No social phenomenon is as comprehensive as an assort on human life as poverty. The life of Sivan often reveals the above facts.
