Adarsh SHG – Together We Achieve More.

The Tsunami waves engulfed some portion of Vypin Block, and the costal region suffered a lot. The aftermath of Tsunami and resurgence waved the path for the formation of Adarsh Self Help Group, in this region.
On 02-01-2003, Fifteen ladies from Nayarambalam Grama Panchayat, formed a group - Adarsh - under the proper guidance of the Lady Village Extension Officer, with a mere contribution of Rs.10/= per head. With frequent meetings and small savings, the Group started functioning initially. A Bank account was opened jointly by President & Secretary, at Catholic Syrian Bank, Narakkal.
Their initial ventures were Grocery Shop and fire wood sales, which did not click. Finally they restored to Prawn Peeling, in a shed.
With proper guidance from Block Office, and hard work by members, their first grading was successfully completed on 30-01-2003. A Revolving Fund of Rs.25,000/= was sanctioned by Catholic Syrian Bank, Narakkal, with Rs.10,000/= towards subsidy. Slowly the Group attained the momentum, and the second grading also passed of successfully. As part of expansion, they shifted to a more spacious shed. For catering to their expansion process, the Bank sanctioned a total amount of Rs.2,04,000/=, with 50 % subsidy.
Now the Group is functioning in a permanent Shed, with all utilities of their own. Their present capacity is 300 Kg. of raw prawns per day, with an output of 180 Kg. of meat. Besides their self employment, they also provide employment to 30 non members, of the Locality. The group attained self sufficiency in Bank dealings, and for handling all day-to-day administration, such as maintenance of accounts, convening meetings etc. The loan is being repaid punctually @ Rs.2,500/= per month. All Group members are paid Rs.100/= per day, for their work, and the Group is attaining an average Gross Profit of Rs.37,500/=, anually.
The famous quoting says “Success goes to those who are dare and courageous, it seldem goes to a timid”. Like wise, in the future, they are planning to expand their work shed, to an export oriented level, as part of entering a more competitive market.
