Kumbalam was an island in Ernakulam district, surrounded by backwaters of Vembanattu. Now N.H.47 byepass road from Edappally to Aroor passes through Kumbalam and the place got some developments thereby. But most of the inhabitants are still living on fishing ,agriculture, and manual labour. The womenfolk of this area are not at all experienced with any productive works. It was really a challenging attempt to create a self help group[S.H.G.] under S.G.S.Y. from these people and to bring forward them to the mainstream of the society.
Aiswarya S.H.G.,Kumbalam in ward No.11 of Kumbalam Grama Panchayat in Vyttila Block Panchayat was formulated on 29th October 2001 by 11 housewives of the area. Asha, Lady Village Extension Officer of Vyttila Block Panchayat, who holds in charge of Kumbalam V.E.O. circle, had taken initiative to form Aiswarya S.H.G. and its post-activities.
The group members held meetings every week, collected thrift amount and deposited the same in Union Bank of India,Thevara branch regularly. They got loans from the deposits and refunded it properly. The Block Panchayat authorities assessed the group activities for six months.
After grading, the S.H.G.was given its Revolving Fund of Rs.25000/-[Rs.20000/- loan and Rs.5000/-subsidy] on 30th July 2002 from U.B.I.Thevara. Utilising this amount they started production of soap powder and tailoring works. As they remitted R.F.regularly, second grading held on 10th March 2004 and the group members were trained for rabbit rearing. Consequently, they got Rs.1,10,000/-under S.G.S.Y.for rabbit rearing [Rs.55000/-loan and Rs.55000/-subsidy].They also continued tailoring works and plantain farming along with rabbit rearing.
All these activities are gone smoothly. Now they get a monthly earning from these works and can repay the loan instalments regularly. Now the repayment is almost to be completed.
The bank officials and block panchayat officials have helped them a lot to make their venture a success. Now we can proudly say that Aiswarya SHG, Kumbalam is capable and efficient to carry out any projects of this kind with a fruitful result.

Sneham, Vypin Block. from Broom Stick to Bus Service

The story unveils a few years back. During 2003, 14 unemployed males, residing at wards 14 and 15 of Pallipuram Grama Panchayat (One of the seven thickly populated Grama Panchayats under this Block), united themselves with an idea to form a Self Help Group (SHG), by name “Sneham” – which means ‘Love & affection’. On 28-11-03, the Group came into existence, and slowly but steadily, it started to function.
Adolescence
It was a very testing time, with money playing a pivotal role in the market, and that was something they needed very badly. All members started to contribute their thrift of Rs.10/= per week, towards working capital, and the same was deposited in a joint account, opened in the name of President and Secretary, at State Bank of India, Cherai. Soon after, with the effort and support of the then VEO of Cherai Circle, the Group was registered under SGSY, at Vypin Block. The initial product by the Group – “Country broom stick” was launched, and the marketing was inaugurated on 11-4-04, by the Hon. President of Pallipuram Grama Panchayat, Smt.A.S.Aruna. Thus the game was on.
Steady Growth
As part of expansion process, a room was rented, with each member contributing Rs.500/= each, towards it. Meanwhile the initial grading was successfully completed, and Rs.50,000/= was sanctioned towards Revolving Fund. With confidence growing, they launched for marketing, almost 60 locally made items – starting with clay pots to dress materials etc. with a Logo “Buy local products and save our Locality”, which clicked in a big way.
Into the Big League
After the success of these initial activities, the Group members, brimming in confidence of their previous success, proposed an idea of “Private Bus Service”, during the time of second grading. After careful scrutiny and analysis, their idea was approved and supported by the Vypin Block, and the financial proposal was placed before State Bank of India, Cherai, with 10 group members subscribing to it. A total amount of Rs.9,78,000/= was sanctioned by the Bank – with Rs.1,00,000/= as Subsidy, and the rest Loan – with a total repayment period of seven years. Hence, after collecting all the details regarding the Vehicle, a 36 seater Bus was purchased (make: TATA 497) from M/S. Popular Mega Motors (P) Ltd, Ernakulam. The Body was built by M/S.Sree Muruga Auto Centre, N.Paravoor. They were sanctioned a peculiar route “ Ernakulam (High Court Jn.) – Cherai Beach – Paravoor”, and thus their small entrepreneurship found a place in the Tourism Map. They did all these without sacrificing their initial business. Only group members are employed in all their enterprises.
Passing word
Today the Group stands high, among all other establishments in the Panchayat. Their Gross Asset is worth 13 Lakhs, and 14 famalies enjoys the fruit of co-operation and economic security. Their Loan is being repaid promptly, and they are confident to clear all the liabilities within the stipulated period. That is “Sneham” - Raw Talents grouped into a Winning Combination.

POURNAMI SELF HELF GROUP – OORAMANA PAMPAKUDA BLOCK

Ooramana is an interior village in Ramamangalam Grama Panchayat in Ernakulam District – “Maattoms” – Small clay pots which is being widely used by the Toddy workers for collecting Toddy comes from Ooramana. “Pournami” – a Self Help Group of 15 women, assisted by the Pampakuda Block under the SGSY scheme, is engaged in the activity of Pottery making, especially these “Maattoms”.
“Pottery making”, which is a traditional handicraft of Kerala is becoming extinct with time. When the new generation is relectant towards practising such traditional crafts, the courage shown by the women of Pournami Group is to be appreciated.
Pournami SHG is ‘ having 15 lady members belonging to the ‘velar’ community. The unit was constituted on the 14 of January,2001, as a result of the efforts of the Village Extension Office, Ooramana. The group was registered under Pampakuda Block. The group grew gradually through internal loans and other activities. On 24.07.2002, the group had its first grading followed by a matching grant of Rs. 5000/-.
Initially, the group members thought of manufacturing commonly used household potteryware. But owing to the guidance and support from the Block officials, they have decided to try a new venture – the manufacture of “Maattoms” which is having a huge demand in the Toddy business. The development of the business in the beginning was slow paced, due to the lack of enough capital, to produce as per demand. Shortly, the business flourished. Then there was a serious thought among the members about further development. Their major needs were to find a common work place for increasing the production. Then there was the question of Money. Pampakuda Block was at their help once again.
An amount of Rs.1,50,000/- was sanctioned as loan with a subsidy of Rs. 75,000/- through Union Bank of India, Oorammana. Using this, the Group could build a ‘work shed and collected enough raw material. Then, there was no turning back. As a part of product diversification, they have started making Garden pots. Thus Pournam’s fame crossed the boundaries of Ernakulam District and reached up to Palghat.
Today, the “Maattoms” produced as a whole is being sold at Palghat alone, each costing Rs. 25/- . Even advance booking is needed to get the product in time. Men, who were making fun of these ladies, initially, have now started helping them. The raw material is being collected from distant places like Vaikom and Nedumbassery. Scarcity of the raw material if the major problem faced by the unit.
The manufacture of “Maattoms’ is a multistaged process. Each and every member of the Group are having their roles. The process begins with the careful mixing of clay, sand and water, in the correct proportions. It is then thoroughly mixed, until the mixtures is having a sticky texture. Then comes the most strenuous part of the process, ie, formation of the ‘pots’ with the help of a turning wheel.
As this stage of the process requires much effort and strain, they are performed with the help of males. The next stage involves the beating of the pots with specially made wooden logs, to bring them to the unique shaps of the ‘Maattoms’. Such beaten ‘Maattoms’ are sun dried and baked in Choolas at stipulated temperatures.
In monsoons, the Group member have to take a break from their activity as there is no facility to dry the pots. In order to maintain the continuity in the income, the Group members are thinking of some other activities like ‘Goat rearing’.
The Group is leaded by a 5 member Committee with Smt. Indira as President and Smt. Ammini as Secretary. The Bank loan has already been repaid upto 70%.
When most of the other groups choose activities like ‘ provisional store’ which do not require much physical efforts, Pournami’s success even after choosing a tedious and strenuous activity, stands apart. The Group members themselves are satisfied with the performance of the Group and the income they obtain from their job. By the time, many Central Government and State Government teams have visited the group to see their success. All the 15 women of the Group found a new life through SGSY and they are highly contented with the same, as evident from the happiness in their faces.
Pournami, Which means a ‘ full moonday’ has enlightened many lives with Glory of a full moon day.

GRAMAJYOTHI SELF HELP GROUP, ELLIKUNNU, PALAKUZHA

The success story of Gramajyothi men’s Self Help Group in Palakuzha Grama Panchayat in Kerala state was proved that SGSY can change lives. It also tell how units of the youth make miracles.
In the village Ellikunnu, most of the villagers are agricultural labours but opportunity for employment is seasonal. In this circumstances Pampakuda Block Panchayat brought here the message of SGSY and inspired the unemployed youth to form an SHG.
Thus Gramajyothi SHG was formed on 2nd October 2003 as per SGSY Guidelines controlled by Pampakuda Block Panchayat.
The eleven members of the unit joined every week and collected a thrift of rupees ten each. The unit opened a thrift and credit account in Union Bank of India, Palakuzha Branch and worked in co-operation, with a determination for self-reliance.
During this time they have created a harmonic relationship with the Block Panchayat and the Bank. They discussed their problem with Block Panchayat and Bank.
After successful six months the SHG allowed its members loan from the thrift account. It really changed the day to day life of the members.
The Bank expressed satisfaction over the SHG and conducted first grading of the unit, and sanctioned revolving fund. The Block Panchayat sanctioned a subsidy of Rs. 10,000/- and the Bank sanctioned a loan amount of Rs. 15,000/-.
Making use of the Revolving Fund and the units share, they started micro enterprises like Copra Processing (coconut oil production) Banana cultivation, production of pickles, vermin compost etc. Copra- processing was the main activity. They collected coconut from the local farmers and produced coconut oil using traditional methods. The pure and hygienic oil became very popular and they named the Brand name “Gramika” for it.
During this time they have co-operated with various developmental activities of the village. They started an agricultural marketing center, and collected agricultural products like turmeric, ginger, banana from the local farmers at fair price.
After second grading the Block panchayat submitted application for loan to the Bank taking copra-processing and agricultural marketing center as the main activities. Union Bank of India, Palakuzha Branch has sanctioned a loan amount of Rs. 2,01,250/- and the Block Panchayat sanctioned a subsidy of Rs. 73,750/-
The unit had pocessed a building for rent and arranged all infrastructures for their activities. They bought copra-drier, Bottling unit, related accessories and started production of coconut oil. As they could not buy a mechanised expeller the production of oil is done by traditional ways. The bottled “Gramika” coconut oil is marketed in the neighbouring villages also. “Gramika” became very popular for its unique quality.
Thus their dreams fulfilled and the activities through SGSY has really changed their lives.
All of the members become self-reliant and their socio economic status increased.
But some of the dreams are left to be fulfilled. An owned building, fully mechanised expeller, a vehicle for marketing are very essential. The Block Panchayat is committed to help the group in this regards, in the coming years.
However, over just an SHG, Gramajyothi has became an indivisible part of the village. They conducted medical camps, seminars on various subjects, co-operated with Grama Panchayats project.
Taking inspiration from SGSY , Gramajyothi became the “light” of the village.

PAMPAKUDA BLOCK

SNEHA SHG PERUMBALLOOR, MUVATTUPUZHA BLOCK PANCHAYAT

Sneha SHG is functioning in the Perumballoor locality which is part of Arakuzha Grama Panchayat in the Muvattupuzha Block. This is a group formed by women from eleven households who did not have a permanent job or regular income. Perumballoor is an Agrarian Economy. Coolie works associated with agriculture would fetch some income to their households, but this was not enough to keep the house fire burning. The group was formed as a result of an awareness campaign undertook by the VEO. He convinced them that they could find a source of regular income through a Central Government Scheme named SGSY and thus closing the doors on poverty forever. Besides he made them confident that through the formation of SHG, they could develop a unity among the households in the neighborhood and it could be utilized for the benefit of the society.
On 14th February 2001, the Group was formed in a meeting convened by the VEO. It was christened ‘Sneha Self Help Group’. Ms.Leelamma John and Ms.Prasanna Krishnankutty were elected the President and the Secretary of the SHG respectively. In accordance with the guide lines issued by the Central Government in this regard, a by-law was drafted for the group and the same was endorsed by the group. The group started functioning after duly obtaining its registration from the Block.
An account was opened at the Union Bank of India, Arakuzha Branch, for depositing the thrift sums of the group members collected and as and when the need arose, the group members were sanctioned loan through that account. As the group performed well in this passion, it took the first grading on 13th February, 2001 and the group emerged with flying colors. Consequently, the group was granted a revolving fund of Rs.25,000/- and it was imparted Basic Orientation Training.
Utilizing the sum they received as revolving fund, the group leased land and cultivated tapioca and plantain. A soap manufacturing unit was also opened. The group succeeded in running these ventures and it also ensured a small but steady income to the group members. Buoyed by the success of these ventures, the group members determined that they should ensure a permanent income and as such they should open up a large-scale venture and this wish had been conveyed to the VEO. Accordingly the group had to undergo the 2nd grading on 20th October 2004 and it got through the same.
Following the successful grading, the VEO convened a meeting of the group, and it was unanimously decided that they would start a Super Market in SGSY Sales Outlet, Perumballoor. The group then applied a loan for this venture at Block Office and it was granted a loan of Rs.1 Lakh and subsidy of Rs.1 Lakh through Union Bank of India, Arakuzha Branch. Using the 2 Lakh rupees the group received by virtue of the loan and subsidy, a Super Market was opened in the SGSY Sales Outlet at Perumballoor selling assorted goods like grocery, provisions, vegetables and fruits and readymade garments.

The Super Market opened by the group was a blessing for the local people who had to depend on Muvattupuzha town for the purchase of essential commodities. The group was appreciated by the local people for distributing good quality products forfeiting too much profit. It also ensured a regular income for the members. Two of the group members deal with the financial transactions while the other members handle other tasks like transporting goods and maintaining accounts. The group members are a complacent lot today as they could start a venture beneficial for the locality, at the same time this could provide them with a permanent income as well.
The group has taken special care in the management of the Super Market and in the repayment of the Bank Loan without default. The group is fortunate to receive immense co-operation from the VEO, Block Authorities, Bank Manager and all those concerned. The group also stands as a united force thus serves for the locality’s development in socio-cultural sphere. Thus ‘Sneha SHG’ continues its triumphant journey, serving as a model for the local people as well as for other Self Help Groups.

The success story of Devamatha Self Help Group bears testimony to the fact that united strength, love and mutual trust can be utilized for the good of individual and the society.

It was the Lady Village Extension Officer Ms.Jancy Issac who gave the requisite guidelines for the group. The group started its functioning by holding weekly meetings and opening up small-scale savings. They opened an SB account in the Federal Bank, Kaloor Branch and deposited their savings there at. The group lends money to its members for their various ventures. Rectifying the fondling problems and by making repayments without default, the group paved way for its first grading.
The limited savings could be used for some urgent needs only. So the members realized that they should take up some new venture that would enhance their income and in turn their standard of life. The group could secure ‘A’ grade in the first grading conducted on it on 27th January, 2004. As a result, it was granted Rs.50,000/- as revolving fund. The group decided to start a new venture, utilizing these funds.
Kaloor is an area that encourages people engaged in animal husbandry. In our times, the consumption of milk produce is on the rise. Realizing these facts, the group decided to start goat rearing. The success the group achieved in this venture buoyed the spirits of the members and this was transformed into their households.
In 2005 January, the group secured ‘A’ Grade in the 2nd grading conducted. Brimming with confidence, the group took a decision to start dairy units. The group stood to benefit a lot from the two day camp on ‘Animal Husbandry’ conducted by Muvattupuzha Block Panchayat. Devamatha SHG is one of the best Self Help Group in Muvattupuzha Block.

AISWARYA SHG AYAVANA, MUVATTUPUZHA BLOCK PANCHAYAT

‘Ambattucolony’ is a neighborhood preponderated by poor coolie workers. This locality is a part of 12th ward of Ayavana Grama Panchayat in Ernakulam District. There are twenty families residing here in dilapidated hutments facing acute shortage of potable water coupled with problems like un motorable roads and the irk. The women of these houses were unemployed even as they lived in penury. It was at this juncture that the SGSY scheme reached their households.
In January 2001 the VEO met the residents of this area and sensitized the people about the need for floating a Self Help Group and the benefits they would receive as part of this scheme. At first none volunteered. But the persistent coercion and encouragement from the VEO made them confident. Thus 12 women from the BPL families formed a Self Help Group christened Aiswarya SHG and elected Geetha Biju as its Secretary and K.A.Raji Mol as its President. The group then obtained its registration and started functioning. They also opened a thrift and credit account at State Bank of India, Ayavana Branch.
Till date the group has an account balance of Rs.55,000/- and it could lend a mutual loan of Rs.48,000/-. Besides it could give Rs.13,000/- as treatment aid for the group members and Rs.2500/- as donation of 2 persons outside the group. In October 2001 the group secured 130 marks out of 150 in the first grading conducted. Consequently the group received Rs.25,000/- as revolving fund and it was utilized for Pineapple cultivation. Though Pineapple farming proved profitable, the difficulty in obtaining land for the same forced the members to think about some new venture. Many members opined that note book production would be a nice choice; given the fact that such a unit was not there in the locality or in the vicinity. Accordingly, group members Sindhu K.N. and Mary Jose were nominated to undergo training to learn the know-how. Thereafter a book binding unit was opened utilizing the revolving fund and the loan availed from the savings. In the just gone by financial year, this unit was able to sell off note books worth Rs.50,000/-. Features of these note books like good quality paper, manual binding, attractive cover and low cost etc., created a good demand for them. The group decided to retain the unit as it could sell off all the books produced and more importantly it could secure good orders for next year. The group decided to open a DTP and a Photostat Centre combined with Stationery so as to ensure employment for every group member.
In July 2006, 2nd grading was conducted and the group vowed to implement the decisions they took. On the anvil of the group is a project worth Rs.36,700/- ;that is to open up a Stationery-DTP-Photostat outlet and a Book Binding Unit at SGSY Sales Outlet, Ayavana. Through this, the group expects employment and income for every group members and there by better standard of life and happiness in their lives. For this, the group is fortunate to receive the support and co-operation from the Bank Manger, BDO and VEO.
A group of women, who used to spoil their time blaming their pitiful life standards and backbiting, are now a happy lot. Now they can boast of running a firm, and earning an income. One can see their beaming faces, radiating happiness and pride. And of course, a thousand bouquets of gratitude to the government, Block Officers, Bank Manager and the VEO. SNEHA, Cheranalloor – Gain of Unity

Cheranalloor, a small and undeveloped village in Koovappady Grama Panchayat belongs to Koovappady Block Panchayat in Ernakulam District of Kerala State.
Women in this area are weaving ‘Panambu’, a Malayalam term meaning Bamboo mat for their livelihood. They have no other means to support their family heads. The people belonging to this field had no co-operation and inter-dependence. There were no awareness programmes which could give ideas of co-operation and organization. In this situation, with the help of the Block Panchayat, we understood and became aware of how we can organize women who have no jobs and to form the Self Help Groups.
Even though the poor families of Cheranalloor village were willing to do hard work for their livelihood, they had neither money to invest nor any supporting situations to fulfill their dreams.
The people in this area depend on the Koovappady branch of Union Bank of India and Cheranalloor Service Co-operative Bank for taking loan. But, we, the poor people of the area, do not get loans or any assistance from these financial institutions due to our poor capacity of repayment. Our family heads had some farming and that was the only income of our families. We were below the average standard of living and could not provide good education to our children. Our families were Below Poverty Line. We were of no pucca houses and sanitary latrines of our own and there were no pucca roads for easy transportation. There were neither marketing facilities nor trading institutions in the area.
Meanwhile our Group leader happened to know about the SGSY scheme and Self Help Groups. Then she contacted with our Village Extension Officer to know more about it. On the basis of the instructions of the Officer, she tried to organize women of poor families not less than 10 and not more than 20 in nearby houses with the help of the VEO. As a result, we, certain women members of nearby houses were joined together in the presence of our Grama Panchayat Ward member. In that meeting, our VEO, Sri. K.T.Baby explained the structure, implementation and advantages of women Self Help Groups. Then, we, the following 12 members came forward with the idea of forming a Group.
We named it as SNEHA SHG, Cheranalloor.
We formed the Sangham and prepared several registers in the name of the Sangham. We opened a joint account in the names of Secretary and President in the Cheranalloor Service Co – operative Bank. We formed thrift to increase the deposit and the capital. Each member deposited a specific amount in the Bank. There were weekly meetings in the members’ houses to discuss and review the activities of the Group. Arrangements were made to avail loans to the members in a low interest rate from the thrift account.
On completion of six months activities, first grading was conducted on 17.04.2002. We became victorious in the grading and a Revolving Fund of Rs. 25,000/- (Rupees Twenty-five thousands only) has been sanctioned to us. This amount consists of Rs. 15,000/- (Rupees Fifteen thousand only) as cash credit of Bank and Rs. 10,000/- (Rupees Ten thousand only) as subsidy from the Block. With this money, Sangham began farming of paddy and vegetables and Soap manufacturing. We used to repay the cash credit in time and avail again as per needs.
The women of the Sangham had a taste in farming. To improve our financial condition, we began to farm paddy in lease land system. Meantime, the Group attained a social status. The members of Grama Panchayat told us to make people joined in the Grama Sabhas. We did it well. The Grama Panchayat authorities entrusted the Group with collecting applications in the Grama Sabhas and directed to help the authorities in the selection of eligible applicants.
Our Group participated in the seminars conducted at Grama and Block level and involved in the sanitation campaigns conducted by Local Bodies etc. As a social work, our Sangham gave cash awards to students of our area who secured high marks in the SSLC examination.
From the inception of the Sangham itself, we used to celebrate Independence Day by organizing cultural competition programmes.
Our Sangham is working in good spirit to improve our activities and wish to begin new employment areas. We discussed and decided to start cattle farming and bamboo mat weavivg. The Group underwent second grading and passed it. Then, the Group has been sanctioned a loan for Rs. 1,60,000/- (Rupees One lakh and sixty thousand only) by the Bank ofwhich Rs. 80,000/- was the subsidy from the Block. The loan was repaid fully in
time. Bank authorities had an impression about the activities of the Group and they had sanctioned a second loan of Rs. 80,000/- for farming and business activities. Under the scheme, we got Rs. 40,000/- being subsidy from the Block. Thus, we got Rs. 1,20,000/- being subsidy from the Government. We began making food items and farming of bush jasmine. Our venture generated money and we repaid the loan amount fully to the Bank.
Our Sangham was formed on 13.08.2001. The members of the Group availed a loan of Rs. 1,84,600/- individually. We are repaying it on a regular basis. We are also repaying the cash credit which we got from the Bank.
Now, our Group members enjoy a good position in the society. If we are in need of some money, we will get loans from Banks without much difficulty. Every year Group conducts annual meetings and cultural programmes of the members. Now, our group completed 5 years service.
Now, our group has a corpus fund of Rs. 71,315/- from which we give short term loans to our members.
Before the formation of the Group, we felt very difficulty to manage the money problems faced on the beginning of the academic year. At that time, we used to borrow money from money lenders on a high rate of interest. At present, the situation has already been changed. Our group provides Rs. 10,000/- each to every members to manage emergency situations. On our insistence in the grama sabhas, roads were made pucca ones and street lights were installed.
Now, the members of our Group are earning Rs. 2600/- per month from the employment and we are proud of improving our status in the society and our standard of living.

DHANALAKSHMI – IN PROGRESS

Some women who belong to the 16th ward of Rayamangalam Grama Panchayat which is under the jurisdiction of Koovappady Block Panchayat in Ernakulam District of Kerala State came to the Panchayat Office to ask about employment opportunities to Smt. Molly Kuriakose, Ward Member of the time. She spoke about ‘ Kudumbasree’ and its advantages. It was a nice idea. About 13 women decided to form a unit. As a result, a new unit was formed on 26.9.2004. The unit was named ‘Dhanalakshmi’. Among the 13 members, a president and secretary were selected. After that, Rs. 50/ was collected from each members and registered in the Grama Panchayat and opened a joint account in the Bank of India, Kuruppampady Branch. The balance of the amount was utilized for buying minutes book, account book and pass book for each members. Every Sunday, all the members were gathered together at the residences of the members one by one and they collected Rs. 10/-each to deposit in the bank account and they put signature in the minutes book writing there names. After that we convened the group meeting according to the agenda. We have discussed our backwardness, reasons for the backwardness and how we can overcome it
Next day, the money was deposited in the bank. After a few months, the members discussed about various employment opportunities. As a result, the members collected Rs.50/- each and bought Chilly,Coriander etc and made it powder, packed and supplied it in various houses. The profit was deposited in the Bank. Each member availed loans from our thrift account in a low rate of interst. In the beginning, members availed Rs. 500/- each as loan. As a result, small needs were fulfilled without depending others.
• Chitty
If an immediate need arises, the members cannot take loan from the Bank in a hurry. So we thought of forming a chitty. Thus we formed a chitty of Rs.2000/-. The Secretary put Rs.500/- in her hand to give urgent loans to the members who had some urgent needs. The balance Rs. 1500/- is deposited in the Bank. This money enabled the members to satisfy their loan needs without approaching the money lenders from other states. This made a new change in the life style of the group members. After 6 months, the VEO conducted the grading. All the members participated in the grading and passed. The members reached the Panchayat to get the Revolving Fund. Then we became aware that the fund may not get from Grama Panchayat. So we discussed the matter in our group meeting and took decision to join Self Help Groups under Block Office and they welcomed us. On the basis of our thrift, we got loan of Rs.25,000/- from the Bank of India. Of this, Rs. 20,000/- is Cash credit from the Bank and Rs. 5000/- is subsidy from the Block Office. Using this money the members did various activities like goat rearing,Soap Powder Business and door to door selling of cloths. We Got much profit . Our VEO encouraged us and told us to do business of a bigger project. So we thought about various activities. Then enquired about machine for making paper cover and told this to the VEO. It was a nice project and VEO asked us to enquire about the project.
Our President and Secretary went o visit a paper cover unit. There, they met a machine worker and he gave the necessary details.
• About the machine.
We enquired about the paper cover machine in an agency of a Coimbatore Company. We got the information that members of the agency can be seen at Ernakulam. When we approached the agency members we understood that the price is too much. Then we became aware of a person named Sanker who knows to make the machine. He agreed to do the work cheaply. We have informed the fact to the VEO. Then VEO also agreed to give the work to Sri. Sankar.
• About the farming
All our 13 members cannot be engaged in paper cover making. So we thought of another project. 5 members decided to do the farming and other five members decided to the work of paper cover. The first five members did the farming of Ginger, Paddy and Plantain. With the help of VEO, we made a project report on these matters.
For that purpose the VEO made a conversation with the Manager of Bank of India, Kuruppamapdy Br. for the group and arranged IInd Grading and the Manager agreed to give sanction for a loan of Rs.6,20,000/ of which Rs. 80,000/ being subsidy. The loan was for paper cover making and agriculture. We bought paper cover machine and printing machine. The Unit was inaugurated by our Block Panchayat President Kum.T.V. Anitha on 19.10.2006. After this, we got the SSI Registration . So we are getting the electricity in a low rate. Our Industries Extension Officer in the Block helped us for this.
With the machine, we can make covers of 10 X 16 to36 X 50 sizes. We are getting orders from ladies centers, backery, hospitals and textiles. Now we are getting an average amount of Rs.18,000/- per month. Out of this, we are repaying the monthly instalment of loan Rs. 10,000/-. At present we have repaid Rs.52,500/. We are trying to get more orders and improve our unit and get more income.
Now, we have no complex to face others in the society. We are proud of ourselves. We have a respectable position in the society. We possess a strong self confidence also.

The small village named Panichayam is a part of Asamannoor Grama Panchayat which is under the jurisdiction of Koovappady Block Panchayat in Ernakulam District of Kerala State. About 70 % of the population of the said Grama Panchayat is under the purview of Below Poverty Line and mainly depends on agricultural activities for their daily livelihood. Major portion of the women population are housewives and they have no employment opportunities. The main income of the families are the meagre earnings of the male members. Under these circumstances, it happened to know about the poverty alleviation schemes under SGSY from Grama Panchayat Ward member . We contacted with Ward member and our Lady Village Extension Officer for more details.
The ‘words’ of the member and LVEO prompted us to form a Women Group of similar thoughts and ideas of not less than 10 members. Accordingly, a meeting of women members of BPL families was convened on 27.02.2000 at the residence of Mr. C.K.Surendran under the presidentship of the ward member and in the presence of LVEO. They spoke in details about the importance, needness and advantage of forming women SHGs besides the guidelines of the scheme.

In addition, we engaged in the production of food products and cultivation of various crops like tapioca, banana, paddy, ginger, cucumber, etc. From this cultivation, we could get a net profit of Rs. 17,000/-. By this time, the ‘limbs’ of ‘Aiswarya’ who were illiterate could write their names and put signatures without others’ help. They became self-reliant in visiting Banks, Offices, etc. and to make transactions. The attitude of co-operation developed among us.
After six months completed from the first grading, second grading was conducted and passed it successfully. Then the Financial Institution sanctioned to ‘Aiswarya’ a sum of Rs. 3,60,000/- of which Rs. 1,24,920/- was subsidy from the Block. This is the effective way to make this Government Scheme to reach the apex aims on which it has been formulated.

UDAYAM S.H.G, UDYOGAMANDAL

Udyogamandal is an industrial belt of kerala. So many public sector undertakings are situated here like fertilizers and Chemicals Travancore Ltd.(F.A.C.T.); Hindustan Insecticides (HIL) and Travancore Cochin Chemicals (TCC) etc. In these factories so many people are working. But most of the people are belonging to a different states of India. Major percent of local people are doing some other works, which does not fetch them, much profit. They are suffering from chronic diseases like Asthma, Bronchitis, and Cancer. The main source of income is from petty trades and cooly only. This led the people to miseries and sufferings. The life of women and children was in a pathetic condition.
The Alangad block authorities identified the fact and decided to help them by the way of central scheme named Swarna Jayanthi Grama Sworozgar Yojana. From the BPL list selected group of women and conducted an awareness camp. The subject matter specialists and experts opened before them a new horizon of bright future. The enthusiastic women organized a group comprising 10 members under the banner “UDAYAM S.H.G.” Out of the 10 members 8 women belonged to general community and two members are from scheduled caste. Self help group was formed on 06th June 2001. Every week they assembled and discussed about various things which they are facing in the society in the day to day life. The meeting was conducted in their own houses alternatively. They started an A/c in the nearest bank and their saving deposited promptly. The lending process among themselves though with low interest seemed to be a boon which served them to meet their urgency.
The first grading was conducted on 29th January, 2002 by the block officials and bank authorities who got satisfied in their credentials which scored them high. As a result they sanctioned and amount of Rs 15,000/- from the bank as loan and Rs 10,000/- from the block as revolving fund. Using this fund they started small business like food processing, selling of rice grains etc. Step by step they began to employ various measures put forth by authorities. Their love for vocation and as a means of income helped them to spread their business with much case touching various levels of excellence.
The second grading was on 24th February 2004. After thorough scrutiny and evaluation the authorities found out that they have all the eligibility to get the maximum assistance from the bank and block. Then, prepared a detailed project report of Rs.320000/- -Rs.240000/- as a bank loan and Rs 80000/- as Govt. subsidy. They widened their business by introducing readymade garment making, Catering and Snakes making which was in great demand. Their unity and enthusiasm helped them to flourish their business. Now they are repaying the installments promptly, at the same time earning an amount not less than Rs 2000/- per mensem. Now they are self sufficient, confident, and optimists and actively lending a hand of support to their family.

SHREYAS S.H.G, VARAPUZHA

Edampadam is a small island situated in Varapuzha Grama Panchayat under Alangad block panchayat of Ernakulam District in the state of Kerala. The villagers are mainly depending on agriculture as the only source of livelihood which is limited to single cropping, primarily paddy. Total dependence on monsoon, which is as erratic ever and vagaries of nature like flood and drought contribute in no small measure to the miseries of the farmers. A large number of farmers use to incur loans at usurious rate of interest from the money lenders of the area. Under these circumstances, the Village Extension Officer of that area convened a meeting of the villagers and explained about the “Swarna Jayanthi Grama Sworozgar Yojana” (S.G.S.Y.) scheme which is implemented through block by Government of India.
In the light of the above meeting 15 women was set up and formed a self help group named “Shreyas” SHG. The group registered in the block office and at the same time they started a joint SB account in the bank. They gave a new shape & colour to their yojana by gathering on Fridays and out coming the strategies to be adopted to establish themselves as SHG. A small, but fixed amount named thrift fund was collected among the members of the group which could be lended among themselves with very low rates of interest. Meeting was also held to discuss and bring about resourceful ideas.
After a span of six months the first grading was conducted by the block officials in the presence of bank authorities. Verified all registers, pass books, documents, accounts and satisfied their dealings. The authorities took immense pleasure in helping SHG in realizing the path to be traced. They were allotted Rs 10,000/- as revolving fund from the block and Rs 15,000/- as loan from the bank. They established into small business, which fetched them profit.
After 1 year a second grading was conducted and they performed a good track record. Then discussed about the venture, which they have to commence and found that there is a good demand for catering, candle making & dry cleaning. By the help of line department prepared a detailed project report comprising an amount of Rs. 2 lakhs as bank loan and Rs. 1.25lakhs as subsidy. The amount was sanctioned by the bank.
Their incredible craze & passion for vocation have helped them to earn the maximum. As per the expectations their business flourished. Their enthusiasm, unity & proper follow up of concerned officers make the SHG as a typical group. It grows as a model SHG in Alangad block also. Now every month they are repaying an amount of Rs 4000/- to the bank against loan portion and at the same time each & every member can earn an amount of Rs.2000/-per month. The villagers are also happy by getting the quality products in their own village.
