Jiya S.H.G –a mile stone in the economic growth of Pothiyakkara ,a rural village in Kalady Panchayath which belongs to Aluva Taluh in Ernakulam District . The Population of the village consists mainly of agriculture labourers .With the advent of small scale industries , theface of the village underwent sudden changes .Many people shift their occupation from the agriculture sector to the Industrial sector .
Rice mills are found very common in the village. The Major part of the male population are occupied in agriculture and other allied sectors. The female members though educated are forced to remain at home with their routine work of home management
In the circumstances some educated women of Pothiyakkara put their step together to find a solution for their unemployment . Many ideas flashed through their brains . They can\me to know about the SGSY scheme of Central Government ,implementing by the Block Panchayat. With the earnest desire to increase the the income of their families they approached the Village Extension Officer, Kalady for guidance. When Village Extension Officer gave them proper guidance , ask how they form a Self Help Group, being the first step of their activity for realizing their dreams .
10 women of BPL families thus joined together to form an SHG which they named Jiya SHG Pothiyakkara. Mrs Rosily Poulose Puthenpura was elected as the president of the SHG. The members were very active and regular in conduct their weekly meetings and collecting thrifts . They helped the members by lending small amount of money to meet their requirements in times of need. After 6 months the SHG was graded and their activity were found satisfactorily. The Ankamaly Block Panchayat gave them an assistance of Rs. 10000/- as subsidy portion of the revolving fund and Rs 25000/- was sanctioned as cash credit from the South Indian Bank Kalady. The Group started small activities flourished quickly . But capital was quite insufficient for them to build up the business.
The group members were very determent to win. The matter was discussed in the meeting ,in the presence of the VEO and scheduled is fixed to conduct the 2nd grading . All the members were mentally prepared to start the Broiler Chicken Farm . The project was prepared and got sanctioned from the Block. The South Indian Bank Kalady sanctioned a loan of Rs. 400000/-out of witch Rs. 100000/- was given as subsidy .
Jiya SHG thus started the Broiler chicken farm, a life long cherished dream came true on 17.2.2006. Almost 4000 chicks are now in the farm in four sections .In 2 months time chicks are ready for sale . All the SHG members are happy and a cheerful always busy with their works. Feeding of chicks and cleaning their cages with rhythm of work . “ A chick here and a chick there . A chick here and a chick there. Everywhere a chick” .
Even after the monthly repayment of the loan, now each members of the group are earning about Rs.4000/-per month. Standard of living of the members has highly increased. All the members have repaired their and modified their houses , sent their children for higher education ,thus enjoying the fruits of the group works emerged out of SGSY. They are absolutely free from the cluchers of the money lenders. They are self reliant need not depend on their husbands for their day to day family expenses. In short the combined consistent and shrewmouse effort of the women folk has totally change their life pattern and stands as example in the path of economics as well as social development growth of the all village of Pothiyakkara .
