AKSHARA SELF HELP GROUP, ONANKKOOR, PAMPAKUDA BLOCK

Akshara is a Self Help Group of 14 women of Onakkoor, a remote village of Pampakuda Grama Panchayat. The group was formed in 2001. Most of the people here are depending on agricultural for their lively hood.
Onakkoore is a place where the infrastructure facilities have not yet reached. It is a remote place having agricultural importance and 3km away from Pampakuda Block Panchayat.
Most of the women are coming from financially backward families, either not even having their own houses or having very small area of land. Yet their standard of living improved a lot after they have formed the Self Help Group . “:Akshara” with the support of Pampakuda Block Panchayat through the Village Extension officer of Onakkoor. Group members conduct the meeting every Sunday and analyse their performance. They have opened a Saving Book Account in Bank of India, Anchelpetty to deposit the thrift amount collected at the rate of rupees 10/- every week.. Now they have a Saving amount of Rs. 51,330/- (Rupees. Fifty one thousand three hundred and thirty only) and it is distributed among the members as small loans. Group members are promptly repaying the thrift loan within the loan period.
The group members are hard working people and self confident. They have started their agricultural activities with the intention of increasing the financial status and upgrade their lives. Their major cultivations where Tapioca, Paddy, Bitter guard, Pulses etc.
Groups first grading was done on July 11, 2002 in Bank of India, Anchelpetty branch. They got the cash credit of Rs. 25,000/- including a subsidy amount of Rs. 5000/- with the help of their savings and cash credit amount they have stared agricultural activities in their small land areas and lease lands.
Second grading was done on December 4th, 2005 in Bank of India, Anchelpetty, After that the bank authorities realise the confidence of group members and satisfactory performance. They allotted the SGSY loan of Rs. 2,00,000/- which is including a subsidy of Rs. 50,000/-
After getting the SGSY loan the group members extended their activities. They took an additional land of 1.5 acre for lease and started the cultivation of paddy, ginger, tapicco etc. . They had a turnover of the first harvest itself of Rs. 45,000/-
Self Help Groups are very helpful for the social, financial and cultural renovation. Akshara SHG is actively participated in the medical camps and sanitation programmes in Pampakuda Block Office and also they are actively engaged all other social programmes. Group members are in reach of new outlets for selling their products. The Secretary of the group is Mani Gopalakrishnan and President is Kochurani Baby. By now they have repaid an amount of Rs. 35,000/-in the loan account.
