As a part of women empowernment a silent revolution on behalf of self supporting groups has taking place in Kerala. In our society women, the weaker section who fion ages have been suppressed are emerging in all fields. In our male dominated society emergence of women self supporting groups have contributed to a lot of changes in the family. Earlier men were the sole bread - winners of the family. But now with the emergence of self supporting groups women have come forward to work ie, in cultivating tapioca, grains, vegetables it has improved their financial status.
Through SHG groups women have become independent simultaneously gaining lot of self confidence. When compared to the earlier times current women have come forward to claim their rights and have also started participation in public functions.
Women who have no recognitions in society who suffered the hardships in life is silence are now reliant and has gained confidence to work in all fields. The ''Aparna '' SHG under SGSY of Chengamanad Grama Panchayath, Aluva Taluk in Ernakulam District is a typical eg. of the group work. The group was formed in March 2002.
This society comprising of 20 members has received Rs. 10000/- as revolving fund and has also received Rs. 15000/- as loan after a year. Later with this amount this group cultivated paddy and tapioca. The harvest was fruitful. In this manner they started receiving money as income in small account Every week there was a meeting of group members and Rs. 10/- was collected as thrift and later deposited in the bank. After assessing the activities of the group Union Bank, Athani advanced a loan or Rs. 24000/- for starting hiring unit and from this amount subsidy of Rs. 120000/- was granted. They arranged plastic chairs, tables, grinders, gas stove, electric coconut grater, temporary built in shelters, tarpaulin , bamboo and vessels etc. This unit started functioning well without the help of men.
This group has the potential to finance for the marriage of the daughter of every group members (30000/- each). When compared to other groups this group has the financial capacity to help every group members in the case of conducting the funeral rites of the family members of this groups. This group also help financially for people suffering from serious physical ailments. Secretary Usha and President Mrs. Ramani said that the started of living had improved and peace and happiness started prevailing in all families. This group has received all helps from Block Development Office officals.
